SGS, the worlds leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company, was awarded a contract to provide complex inspection and testing services for the construction of a thirty eight storey steel structured building, located at Chin Shan South Road in Taipei City, Taiwan, on April 28, 2011.

In order to ensure the highest quality of the steel structure, with respect to national and international standards and requirements, SGS Industrial Services will conduct Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Services, including Ultrasonic Testing, Magnetic Particle Testing, Quality Assurance and Quality Control for the duration of the entire project, which is scheduled for construction from July 2011 to March 2012.

Using Non-Destructive Testing, SGS will inspect the steel structure for defects and discontinuities at the manufacturers factory as well as on the construction site in order to ensure the highest quality and that it meets the performance requirements of the building.

Having extensive experience and expertise in projects of this kind, SGS will apply Ultrasonic Testing and Magnetic Particle Testing, both NDT methods, for the investigation of the steel structure and welds. For Ultrasonic Testing SGS makes use of sound waves with short wavelengths and high frequencies to identify flaws and measure any variations in the thickness of the steel structure to detect corrosion. By measuring these sound waves, skilled SGS experts can define the location and size of any imperfection, respective to the wall thickness of the steel structure.

In order to detect cracks on or just below the surface of the steel structure, SGS will apply Magnetic Particle Testing. This NDT technique sends a magnetic flux through the material. At the location of an imperfection, a leakage field is created. This attracts metal iron dust, which is sprayed onto the surface. With Magnetic Particle Testing, SGS determines the length of an imperfection in a very reliable way. SGS Industrial Services utilizes Magnetic Particle Testing for all ferrous metals, such as carbon steel, low alloy and cast iron. The main use of Magnetic Particle Testing is for welds and their heat affected zones.

In addition, SGS will conduct Quality Assurance and Quality Control at the manufacturers site in order to ensure that the steel structure will satisfy the customers requirements in a systematic and reliable way and that it is in accordance with all contractual specifications, codes and standards. SGS Quality Assurance (QA) gives the project owner confidence that the steel structure meets the prescribed quality standards and will perform satisfactorily during service. Additionally, SGS Quality Control (QC) focuses on the actual measurement, testing or supervision of manufacturers own final product control, either by inspection of each unit or by sample testing.

Applying its first-rate experience and competence, SGS helps the client to ensure that the steel structured building will satisfy stringent quality requirements and regulations and will be in accordance with national and international standards.
